Square Enix has announced that all digital sales of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will be halted until the company is able to expand its server capacity for the relaunched MMORPG. Yesterday was the official release day for the game, though players who pre-ordered Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn had access to a head start over the past weekend. Unfortunately, server issues meant plenty of eager gamers weren’t even able to access the game, even yesterday.

According to Square Enix, it’s taking this measure due to “overwhelmingly positive response” to the game, and since players are currently experiencing long wait times to log in and play, it will halt digital downloads until it feels comfortable with its servers. Earlier yesterday, Square Enix announced that it has a plan to expand its server capacity over the coming days and hopes to have it taken care of by next week.

Producer and Director of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Naoki Yoshida, issued out an emotional apology to all those affected yesterday at the game’s official launch party. Physical copies of the game are still available for both the PC and PlayStation 3.
