Square Enix’s storied MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI, will enter its final chapter of major updates this year. The company has announced that the game will cease operation of game services on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 consoles in March 2016, but players enjoying the game on the PC will be able to do so beyond that date.
As the game enters its 14th year of service this May, Final Fantasy XI will celebrate with the “Vana’diel Project,” serving as the pinnacle of the Final Fantasy XI story. The first chapter in the final scenario, “Rhapsodies of Vana’diel” will be launched alongside updates taking place in May 2015. In total, there will be three major initiatives as the epic tale comes to a close with the second chapter releasing in August and the last in November. Those updates will also add new content, exciting battles and never-before-seen reward items.
After the final chapter of Rhapsodies of Vana’diel releases, major updates to the game will cease but maintenance will continue to fine-tune content. An in-game event called “The Goddess’s Gala” will be hosted as a festival to thank all the players that have supported Final Fantasy XI through the years and will consist of numerous campaigns for everyone to enjoy.
Rhapsodies of Vana’diel will not be a DLC or expansion and will be added as free content for current subscribers.
