We believed the Final Fantasy x Magic: The Gathering collaboration would be a big one, but Hasbro has now confirmed just how huge a release it was. Magic: The Gathering’s revenue grew 23 percent in the second quarter of 2025, driven by the release of Final Fantasy, which set the record as the biggest set release in Wizards’ history. During the earnings call, Hasbro CEO Chris Cox confirmed that Final Fantasy is already the highest-grossing Magic set ever and that it delivered $200 million in revenue in a single day. The Lord of the Rings set, by comparison, took six months to reach that amount.
Cox added that the company left demand on the table because it couldn’t produce enough. This was despite increasing production runs four times prior to release—by very high double-digit percentages, he said. Perhaps surprising to some, Cox stated that he believes Final Fantasy is almost as strong as Lord of the Rings in terms of IP strength, if not stronger in some regions.
While the recent entries in the Final Fantasy franchise haven’t been record-breaking in terms of sales, the appeal of the Magic: The Gathering set shows just how popular the franchise is worldwide. Final Fantasy XVI had its high points but also its low points. Meanwhile, I currently consider Final Fantasy VII Rebirth the best game I’ve ever played, and Final Fantasy XIV remains one of my favorite games of all time.
We contributed to that massive total by collectively spending over $20,000 as we worked to complete as full a set as possible.
