Dragonkin: The Banished is one of those games we’ve had our eye on, but haven’t quite found the time to play it. NACON and EKO Software gave us another reason to find the time with Dracomundus Purgatory, a free update for the co-op hack-and-slash that launched back in March. It’s live now on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, and PC, and it brings full cross-play, a timed endgame gauntlet, and a new weapon tier that runs on sacrificing your own gear.

Full cross-play arrives with the update, letting players group up across PlayStation, XBOX, and PC regardless of platform, with shared progression and simplified loot sharing between everyone in the party. City Transfer lands alongside it, allowing players to move an online city over to offline mode at any point and back again just as easily.

Dracomundus Purgatory itself opens through a portal at the end of an endgame hunt and runs as a race against the clock. You fight through three islands drawn from a pool of more than 50, clearing out every enemy before time expires, while destroying the Draconic Altars scattered along the route buys back precious seconds to keep the timer alive. Survive to the final island and the Champion of Purgatory is waiting, with a Voracious weapon as the possible payout.

Those Voracious Weapons are the update’s brand new equipment category, each carrying passive traits meant to reshape how a build actually plays. You can sacrifice other weapons to transfer their power and push a Voracious weapon’s level higher, and the custom forge lets you pick exactly which affixes get applied during reinforcement, so the end result can be shaped around your build and your Ancestral Grid.

For now, our ARPG time is going to Grim Dawn, where the third and final expansion, Fangs of Asterkarn, just launched and has kept us busy since. Dragonkin is still on the list, though, and we plan on getting to it soon.
