Brotato is one of my favorite games to play on the Steam Deck, but it has gotten a bit stale due to a lack of updates. Well, that’s changing because developer Evil Empire is taking over support for the title, and its first update is now live. If you haven’t heard of Evil Empire, it’s the team behind this year’s The Rogue Prince of Persia, and it handled Dead Cells’ post-launch support with more than 25 updates and DLC. It’s now taking over support for Blobfish Games’ Brotato, and today’s New Dawn update is the first content update for Brotato since late 2024. We’re really happy to hear that Evil Empire will continue to deliver updates for Brotato under the watchful eye of Blobfish.

The New Dawn update includes six new items, one new weapon, a ban system, save profiles, a Codex, and icons in character and item descriptions, as well as various tweaks to VFX, animation, and accessibility. Of the six new items, fresh meat is unlocked by default, while the remaining five must be unlocked with an in-game achievement. The new weapon is the Vorpal Sword, which is unlocked after reaching 100 percent crit chance. I’m most excited about the ban system, which allows players to choose up to eight items to ban from the shop during a run. Anyone who plays these types of games knows how important a ban system is in order to increase the odds of putting together the build you want. To access the ban system, players will have to win a run on Danger 3 or higher.

Evil Empire has also added the ability to have three different save profiles, along with options to copy and reset saves. The Codex is a new hub that’s basically an in-game wiki that includes personal statistics and information on items, weapons, and enemies. Players will also find a new toggle in the Accessibility menu for “Show effects icons.” The icons are designed to improve readability and make it faster to associate which items and characters work well with certain stats. Evil Empire also confirmed Mac and Linux support, which was already in the works under the Blobfish era.

For Brotato veterans, today’s a great day to return if you haven’t played in a while. I’m looking forward to taking a break from Megabonk to return to Brotato with today’s New Dawn update.
