Valve has revealed that its Steam Machines and Steam Controllers will begin shipping December 13, 2013 to the 300 selected beta participants. The 300 beta testers will be notified today around 2:00 PM PT and will receive the Steam Machine with SteamOS and Steam Controller for testing. They will also be awarded with a special badge on their Steam Community profile to indicate that they’re a beta participant. Lastly, a number of games that run natively on SteamOS will be added to those beta users’ libraries.
Though it wasn’t Valve’s original plan, the beta will be limited to the U.S. only due to regulatory hurdles. Commercial versions of Steam Machines that will be on sale starting in 2014 won’t be affected by this however.
SteamOS will be made available when the prototype hardware ships to the beta participants and can be downloaded by individual users and commercial OEMs.
