There’s a lot of discussion about $79.99 video games these days, with Mario Kart World paving the way for other developers and publishers to do the same. Recently, Xbox confirmed it’ll be raising the prices of some first-party titles to $79.99 this holiday season, and we strongly suspect Sony will do the same. While we have little doubt that Mario Kart World will continue to sell like gangbusters despite its price tag, not all games are as popular as Mario Kart.
Perhaps to prove that $79.99 doesn’t necessarily mean fun, developer Hazelight Studios has confirmed Split Fiction has sold over four million units since its launch on March 6, 2025. The $49.99 game quickly sold one million units in its first 48 hours, and it’s still a remarkable number considering only one in two people need to own a copy of the game in order to play together. That means at least eight million people have experienced Split Fiction, but it’s likely significantly more since many people have shared the game with more than one person. We absolutely loved Split Fiction, and in our review, we praised it for its sheer variety of gameplay and polish.
Joining Split Fiction in having sales success as a $49.99 game is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which recently announced that it has sold over two million units. Like Split Fiction, we found Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to be an amazing experience and goes to show that a game’s price tag doesn’t necessarily reflect its quality. In fact, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 offers over 60 hours of quality gaming. We loved our time with the game so much that we’re giving away at least one copy to a random person because we want more people to experience it.
