The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is hitting theaters on April 1, so it’s about time that the marketing machine starts rolling with all the new merchandise. While there have been some interesting tie-ins like Pillsbury Yoshi Egg Cookies, deodorant with Old Spice, and random cereal, this is really the first newsworthy product we’ve seen. It’s called a Hatchin’ Yoshi, and it comes from Spin Master. If you’ve never heard of the company, it created the Primal Hatch, an interactive Jurassic World hatching dinosaur egg. Naturally, it would be a perfect fit for Yoshi, the Mario franchise’s own dinosaur.
The Hatchin’ Yoshi does as its name suggests. It comes in a Yoshi egg, and when you’re ready to watch him hatch, you’ll remove the tabs. You’ll begin by tapping the egg, knocking on it, and rocking it back and forth. Once Yoshi is ready, the egg will rock on its own and will slowly crack. Eventually, Yoshi pops out and you can peel apart the egg pieces to remove him from his shell. Once he’s out of his egg, you can save the bottom for display purposes. The Yoshi figurine inside the egg is interactive too. You can gently pat his head, touch his nose, or push down on his shell to speak to him, and he’ll talk back.
The product is officially releasing on February 20, but it’s currently available for preorder at Walmart for $49.88. As a huge Yoshi fan, I didn’t even hesitate this morning.
