It’s been nearly a week since Final Fantasy XVI’s release and Square Enix has confirmed today via Twitter that it has shipped and digitally sold three million units. Although this figure pales in comparison to the 10 million units sold by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in its first three days, it’s worth noting that a lot fewer people own PlayStation 5 consoles than Nintendo Switch units. While we don’t have an exact number, it’s safe to assume PlayStation 5 sales is around the 40 million mark, since the console reached 38.4 million in Sony’s latest financial earnings report.
That would mean approximately 7.5% of the PlayStation 5’s player base have purchased Final Fantasy XVI, which is an impressive number. It’s fairly close to Tears of the Kingdom’s ratio, since Switch sales are confirmed to be over 125 million as of March 31, 2023.
