This year might end up being one of the best years for video games, with Resident Evil 4, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Diablo IV, Street Fighter 6, Final Fantasy XVI, Starfield, and Spider-Man 2, all arriving in 2023. While we have a crowded month of June ahead of us, Spider-Man 2 isn’t set to release until sometime this fall and today during the PlayStation Showcase, we were shown the first-ever gameplay for the upcoming sequel.
For Marvel’s Spider-Man fans, there is a lot to unpack from today’s reveals. For starters, we get a better look at Kraven the Hunter, who is in search of an equal. Along with Kraven’s Great Hunt and an all-new Symbiote threat, Marvel’s New York is looking busy as ever, even with two Spider-Men at our disposal: Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
In the gameplay reveal video, Kraven’s Hunters are in pursuit of Dr. Curt Connors, who is best known as The Lizard. The original Spider-Man from this video game series, Peter Parker, is seen wearing the iconic Black Suit as he’s now a Symbiote-bound hero. In the gameplay reveal, Parker’s Spider-Man is loving the Symbiote’s tendrils, perhaps a little too much.
“In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, we’re putting respect on the Black Suit and giving it the story it deserves,” said Aaron Jason Espinoza, senior community manager at Insomniac Games “In this installment, we’re really delving into Peter’s personal relationship with the Symbiote and how it affects those closest to him.”
It appears players will have the opportunity to switch between Parker and Morales throughout Spider-Man 2, and the gameplay reveal also gives us our first look at what Morales has up his sleeves. New gadgets like the Web Grabber and new abilities such as Thunder Burst should offer an interesting contrast of gameplay styles between the two Spider-Men.
Although more details will surely emerge closer to the game’s launch, it seems like players won’t be able to seamlessly switch between the two characters at any point in the game. Instead, swapping will happen during a variety of story moments.
