One of our most anticipated games of the year, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is already receiving a live-action film adaptation. The game isn’t due to release until April 24, but Variety reports that developer Sandfall Interactive is collaborating with Story Kitchen on a film version of the game. It will be interesting to see how they translate the unique visuals from the game into a live-action adaptation.
Although we still do not know how the story will play out, the premise sounds intriguing. Essentially, a Paintress paints a cursed number on her monolith each year, causing all individuals of that age to vanish. The number decreases each year, which means humanity is facing eventual extinction. As the game’s name suggests, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 tells the story of a mission to end the cycle by confronting the Paintress before she paints once more.
Currently, the project is seeking a cast and directors. Story Kitchen’s founders, Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg, along with Timothy I. Stevenson and Elena Sandoval, will be producing. Story Kitchen has several video game adaptation projects in progress, including the recent Tomb Raider animated series on Netflix and the live-action TV and film projects at Amazon MGM Studios. It’s also working on Just Cause, Streets of Rage, and ToeJam and Earl adaptations.
“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sandfall Interactive to bring the rich, immersive world of ‘Expedition 33’ to the big screen,” said Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson & Mike Goldberg. “The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike.”
