The rumors have been confirmed: Final Fantasy XIV Mobile is under development by Lightspeed Studios, bringing the world of Eorzea to mobile devices. Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida unveiled the game with a trailer showcasing gameplay from the mobile version. It’s being called an adaptation of the critically acclaimed online role-playing game, with Square Enix saying it offers an “exciting extension of the beloved franchise by capturing the immersive experience of the original title in a fresh, mobile-friendly format.” Yoshida described the new mobile game as a “sister to FFXIV,” aiming to recreate the grandeur of the original’s story and combat mechanics on mobile devices. He did confirm that crafting and gathering mechanics through Disciples of the Land and Hand will also be implemented.
While not explicitly stated, it appears to be a separate, standalone experience, described as “a nostalgic journey in a new format.” Lightspeed Studios is faithfully recreating the original’s gameplay and story experience while retaining lifestyle content, including fishing, Triple Triad, and chocobo racing. The game will launch with a variety of playable races, likely those available from A Realm Reborn, and nine jobs. The Armoury system will allow players to switch jobs freely, and multiplayer will be available. The website also mentions that players will be able to customize their own cozy homes—hopefully using a system better than the one currently found in Final Fantasy XIV.
The game will soon be available for demo through multiple play tests in the Chinese market, followed by a global launch. For those who are unfamiliar with Lightspeed Studios, it’s the co-developer of PUBG Mobile and is currently developing Last Sentinel.
Final Fantasy XIV is one of the best games I’ve ever played and possibly my favorite of all time. I enjoyed my time in the most recent expansion, Dawntrail, as the game looks to embark on a new story following the conclusion of the Hydaelyn vs. Zodiark arc. I’m intrigued by the idea of a mobile version and excited to see how it plays.
You can watch the reveal trailer below, and Final Fantasy XIV veterans will want to stay until the very end for an amusing message.
