It started to feel like a fever dream. At E3 2017—yes, seven years ago—Nintendo announced that a new Metroid Prime game was in the works. That game would be Metroid Prime 4, which then went silent until Nintendo confirmed it was rebooting development in 2019 and handing the project to Retro Studios, the original developer for the Metroid Prime series. Fans have been holding tight to rumors about the game since then, but we can finally rest easy knowing the game does exist and it has the fancy name of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

Shown during today’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond gave some Halo: Combat Evolved vibes but is very much a Metroid Prime game. We see the familiar sight of Samus Aran landing on a planet, locking onto enemies, and scanning targets. No teaser trailer would be complete without Samus turning into her signature morph ball. The end of the trailer hints at the game’s villain, flanked by Metroids.

For those new to the Metroid Prime franchise, check out Metroid Prime Remastered on the Nintendo Switch. There are rumors that Metroid Prime 2 and Metroid Prime 3 are also getting remastered versions. If they do exist, expect those to be released as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond gets closer, sometime in 2025. For now, Nintendo didn’t have much to share about the game, simply stating the following in a press release:

Metroid Prime 4 Beyond: The galaxy’s greatest bounty hunter Samus Aran will embark on a new mission. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a new entry in the Metroid Prime series, is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2025.
