It’s widely believed that the successor to the Nintendo Switch will debut this year, but Nintendo likely still has an internal goal to hit with its current console. The company announced that hardware sales for the Switch family have reached 139.36 million units, inching closer to the Nintendo DS’s mark of 154.02 million. The PlayStation 2 is still the record holder for best-selling console at over 155 million units but that’s within reach for the Switch.
Software sales for the Switch have surpassed the 1.2 billion mark. Nintendo announced that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (review) has sold 20.28 million units, while Super Mario Bros. Wonder (review) has sold 11.96 million units. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to lead the way with an astonishing 60.58 million units sold, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons a distant second at 44.79 million. These figures include software bundled with hardware, other products, and digital sales.
For the first quarter of 2024, Nintendo highlighted three main games: Another Code: Recollection (January 19), Mario vs. Donkey Kong (February 16), and Princess Peach Showtime! (March 22). This spring, Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan will expand with the addition of the Donkey Kong Country area.
