We expect to hear the letters “AI” a lot this year, and it was definitely repeated dozens of times during the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event, where the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra made their debut. The latest devices from Samsung Electronics place a heavy focus on Galaxy AI, even though some of the features aren’t exactly novel. Nevertheless, AI plays a role in streamlining the usage and application of these features in our daily lives, such as enabling barrier-free communication through live translation in both text and calls.

Live Translate provides two-way, real-time voice and text translations of phone calls and messages within the native app. With the Interpreter feature, live conversations can be instantly translated in a split-screen view. Samsung claims this works even without cellular data or Wi-Fi, suggesting that all processing occurs on the device.

AI is also utilized for messages and other applications, with Chat Assist helping to create conversational tones to ensure communication sounds as intended. An example is like a polite message to a coworker, or a short and catchy phrase for a social media caption. The Samsung Keyboard also benefits from AI, now capable of translating messages in real-time across 13 languages. While driving, Android Auto can automatically summarize incoming messages and suggest relevant replies and actions, so you can stay focused on the road.

Other features include Note Assist with AI-generated summaries in Samsung Notes, and Transcript Assist, which uses AI and Speech-to-Text to transcribe, summarize, and even translate recordings. One feature prominently highlighted by Samsung during its event is the gesture-driven Circle to Search, developed in collaboration with Google. With this feature, users are able to long press on the home button, then circle, highlight, scribble on, or tap anything on the screen to see search results without having to leave the current app.

For photography, the Galaxy S24 series’s ProVisual Engine is a comprehensive suite of AI-powered tools that work in tandem with the camera hardware. The Galaxy S24 Ultra boasts a new Quad Tele System with a 5x optical zoom lens and is capable of delivering crystal-clear results at up to 100x with enhanced digital zoom. During the presentation, Samsung enlisted the help of MrBeast to demonstrate the camera’s new capabilities.

The Galaxy S24 features a 6.2-inch FHD+ screen, while the Galaxy S24+ has a 6.7-inch QHD+ screen. Both devices feature Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays with a Super Smooth 120Hz refresh rate, variable from 1 to 120Hz. For battery size, the S24 has a 4,000 mAh unit while the S24+ uses a larger 4,900 mAh battery. The standard Galaxy S24 comes with 8GB of RAM and users can select from 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options. The larger S24+ has 12GB of RAM with 256GB and 512GB storage options.
