In September, Unity announced new Runtime Fees that are likely to be remembered as one of the worst decisions in game development history. The backlash was nearly immediate from hundreds of developers and it resulted in many of them seeking alternative options. Brian Bucklew of Freehold Games, the developers behind Caves of Qud, spent a couple of days live-tweeting the process of porting their game to Godot. Freehold Games weren’t alone in exploring Godot’s potential. The creators of Slay the Spire have now released a new game, Dancing Duelists, using the free and open-source Godot engine.
According to its page on itch.io, Dancing Duelists resulted from a three-week game jam by the Mega Crit team, aimed at exploring the Godot engine. The description for the game is simple: “A deckbuilding autobattler dance off with a BUMPIN’ soundtrack.” The game is free to download and play, with Mega Crit encouraging donations to Godot for those interested in contributing financially.
