The next big hit of 2023, has arrived, at least on PC. From Larian Studios comes Baldur’s Gate 3 and early reviews (in-progress) are extremely positive. Unfortunately, review keys for the game were sent out on Sunday, so most reviewers haven’t had ample time to properly complete the game. Some reviewers, however, have forgoed sleeping in order to complete a playthrough, such as Mortismal Gaming. As a reminder, Baldur’s Gate 3 launches on PlayStation 5 on September 6, and those who preorder the Deluxe Edition will get access to the game 72 hours earlier, along with other goodies.

Larian Studios is best known for creating Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel, but the company clearly knows what it’s doing in the CRPG space. For those who aren’t familiar with Baldur’s Gate, the series is based on the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop role-playing system and the third entry features turn-based combat, much like Larian Studios’ other games. However, it is based on the D&D 5th Edition rules.

Admittedly, CRPGs have a fairly high barrier to entry if you’ve never played one before. I can’t comment on whether Baldur’s Gate 3 is a good entry point to the genre just yet, but I’m hoping I can offer some advice on that in the coming weeks after spending some time with the game.
