The developers behind Dying Light and Dying Light 2: Stay Human have announced a partnership with Tencent, which is in the process of becoming Techland’s majority shareholder. While it’s being spun as a partnership in the press release, Tencent is basically acquiring Techland, although Techland states it will retain full ownership of its IPs, maintain creative freedom, and continue to operate the way it believes is right. Techland CEO Pawel Marchewka will remain in the position.
Teaming up with Tencent will allow us to move full speed ahead with the execution of the vision for our games,” said Marchewka in a post published on Techland’s website. “We have chosen an ally who has already partnered with some of the world’s finest video game companies and helped them reach new heights while respecting their ways of doing things.
Chinese-owned Tencent is investing heavily in all forms of media. It fully or partly owns numerous studios including Riot Games, Epic Games, and more recently, Turtle Rock Studios, the creators of Back 4 Blood.
We loved the original Dying Light and its DLC, The Following. However, we were pretty disappointed in the sequel, Dying Light 2: Stay Human.
