One of our most anticipated games of 2025 will now be released in 2026. Craig Duncan, Head of Xbox Game Studios, has confirmed the Fable reboot is now releasing in 2026. The news was shared during an official Xbox podcast with host Tina Amini. “While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait,” said Duncan. “And I just, I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team.”

The Playground team Duncan is referring to is Playground Games, the developer behind the highly successful Forza Horizon series. Sure, it may seem a bit odd that a team known for its open-world racing games is working on a modern adventure game, but we have faith because Playground has proven time and again that it can create a fun game. Some pre-alpha footage of Fable was shown during the podcast, revealing combat, magic, and some of the environments.

The podcast episode is about 20 minutes long and features Duncan sharing his thoughts on other games, including Avowed, South of Midnight, Ninja Gaiden 4, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and DOOM: The Dark Ages. You can watch it below.
