Stop pinching yourself; you’re not dreaming. Total War is finally going back to the medieval era with the announcement of Total War: Medieval III. The game is confirmed to be in early development, and is being designed to be a rebirth of historical Total War rather than just a sequel. Serving as game director is Pawel Wojs, who worked on Medieval II nearly 20 years ago. Knowing how important Medieval III is to the community, the team is looking to share much more about the project in its early phases and will have a hub to share news and updates on its progress. For now, we can expect to get updates on a roughly quarterly basis.

According to Wojs, Medieval III aims to be the definitive Total War sandbox set within the Medieval world. The team wants to build the ultimate “What if?” game where the player can alter the course of history. So it’ll be up to them to decide whether they want to follow the course as written in the history books or take a different step in rewriting it. Wojs also said that the team has been wanting to make this game for a very long time, and has made attempts in the past to bring it to life. It isn’t until now that they feel like they can truly do it justice.

Helping give that confidence is Warcore, the next evolution of Total War’s game engine. Warcore features a bespoke set of new and improved tools, from the animation system to the renderer and campaign building blocks, so the team can realize its vision of bringing the medieval era to life in ways it couldn’t previously.

Currently, the game is in early pre-production, meaning it’s years away from being released. This is the first time the Total War team has talked about a game this early in pre-development, but it knows just how important Medieval III is and wants to work with the community to make the best game possible.

If you want to learn more about the vision of Total War: Medieval III, the game’s creative director, Leif Walter, has shared a detailed post about it on the game’s official website. Basically, the game’s guiding motto is “Rewrite History,” and the player should feel like the Architect of Feudal Realms.
