The “little” indie game Stardew Valley recently updated its press page and confirmed that the game has now sold over 41 million copies across all platforms as of December 2024. Over 26 million of those units were sold on PC, while 7.9 million copies were sold on the Nintendo Switch. The remaining sales are spread across the other platforms on which the game is available, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Android, and iOS. This is an impressive figure, considering that the game was originally developed by a single person, Eric Barone (ConcernedApe).
Originally released on February 26, 2016 on PC, Stardew Valley quickly sold one million copies within two months. It would head to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in December 2016, before landing on the Nintendo Switch in late 2017. The first mobile launch was on iOS in October 2018, while Android’s version came in March 2019. Support for Stardew Valley has continued since its launch, including multiplayer in late 2018 thanks to network code from Chucklefish programmer Tom Coxon. There is currently a small team that Barone has formed to help him continue updating the game.
If you’ve somehow never heard of Stardew Valley, it’s a casual, cozy game where players create and manage the farm of their dreams in Pelican Town. Players can socialize with over 30 residents of the town, including sharing life on the farm with one of the 12 characters with whom they can date, marry, and even have children. Stardew Valley is a lovely casual game that can be played in short or long sessions. We highly recommend the game, especially if you have a group of friends to play with.
