Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct ended with the announcement of the Nintendo Today! app, which the company is using to deliver news directly to its fans. Some people speculate that the Nintendo Today! app was launched so Nintendo does not have to rely as heavily on social media to reach a mass audience. It took just a single day for Nintendo to put that concept to the test, making a significant announcement exclusively through its app: The Legend of Zelda’s live-action film is set to release worldwide on March 26, 2027.
Few details are still known about the upcoming movie, but we know that Sony Pictures will debut it, and it is being co-produced by Sony and Nintendo. The movie was first announced in November 2023, following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It will be produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, with Arad known for his work on Marvel movies and other video game adaptations such as Uncharted and Borderlands—neither of which really give gamers hope. Wes Ball has been announced as the director.
While some of the names attached to the project might not instill confidence, especially considering how poorly received the Borderlands movie was, Miyamoto-san deserves the benefit of the doubt. No one loves Nintendo’s franchises as much as Miyamoto, so let’s hope he can do justice to the Zelda franchise and continue Nintendo’s successful run at the box office.
