Originally released in 1996, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars resulted from a collaboration between Square (before it became Square Enix) and Nintendo. This SNES game was iconic as it marked a significant departure from the side-scrolling, platforming Mario gameplay that everyone was familiar with up until then. It also introduced an RPG-style story revolving around Mario and his quest to defeat Smithy, who has stolen the seven star pieces of Star Road.

Square incorporated many of its trademark RPG elements into the game, including turn-based combat, leveling, and equipment. Super Mario RPG serves as the spiritual predecessor to the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi franchises.

Now, a new generation of gamers will get to experience it for the first time, while those who played the original can relive the experience in all-new HD graphics. The remake is set to launch on November 17, 2023, adding to an already packed year of game releases.
