On paper, Star Wars Outlaws had all the makings of a great Star Wars game. For years, players have wanted an open-world Star Wars game that didn’t focus on Jedi characters, exploring the gritty underworld of bounty hunters and scoundrels. Unfortunately, as I mentioned in my Star Wars Outlaws review, the game’s core gameplay loop was a bit of a slog. Although the game has improved since its original release, it still hasn’t resonated with many players and remains a bit of a disappointment with Star Wars fans. That being said, there are a few shining moments throughout the game and those who just want a Star Wars adventure should take a look.
The game stars scoundrel Kay Vess and her companion Nix as Kay embarks on one big score to change her life. The story takes place between Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, which creates an interesting universe to explore. Unique to the Switch 2 version are gyroscope-assisted aiming and motion controls in hopes of delivering a more immersive experience. Although the game has its shortcomings, it offers one of the most varied Star Wars experiences, with multiple planets to explore, including the iconic Tatooine. Hopefully, the team has optimized the port, and it runs smoothly on Switch 2 hardware.
