Over 30 years later, Mario and Sonic are still battling it out, but this time, it’s at the box office. The truth is, it’s not even close, but Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has officially become the second highest-grossing video game movie of all time after hitting $462 million worldwide. It trails The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which reached $1.36 billion worldwide, so chances are it will remain comfortably in the second-place spot.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s box office total now surpasses Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, which grossed $450 million, and Warcraft’s $439 million total from 2016. Rounding out the rest of the list for video game movie adaptations are Rampage at $428 million, Uncharted at $407 million, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 at $405 million. The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie reached $319 million worldwide.

Released in 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was wildly successful, becoming the 10th animated film of all time to reach the $1 billion milestone. More impressively, it was the first animated movie to reach that mark since the COVID-19 pandemic. Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s worldwide total still hasn’t surpassed The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s U.S. total, which was nearly $575 million.
