After months of leaks, retail listings, and ratings-board sightings, SEGA has officially announced Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition and shadow-dropped it onto Switch 2 today. The release is priced at $49.99 and is available both digitally and as a physical game key card, with the timing tied to Sonic’s 35th anniversary, as June 23 marks 35 years since the original Sonic the Hedgehog launched on the SEGA Genesis in 1991.
The Definitive Edition runs better on Switch 2 than the original Switch version, with improved performance, better graphics, and reduced loading times. It ships with two graphical options, a performance mode that favors frame rate and a separate resolution mode, and save data can be carried over from the Switch release, though not in the other direction. There is also no upgrade path for existing Switch owners, so anyone who already bought the 2022 version will need to purchase this edition separately.
As the name suggests, the package collects everything released for Sonic Frontiers since its 2022 launch. That includes The Final Horizon story campaign, the Sonic’s Birthday Bash and Sights, Sounds, and Speed content updates, a digital art book, and a mini soundtrack. Previously released bonus items are bundled in as well, namely the Explorer’s Treasure Box, the Monster Hunter Collaboration Pack, the Sonic Adventure 2 Shoes, and the Holiday Cheer Suit, though the Explorer’s Treasure Box content only validates when you start a New Game.
Sonic Frontiers first launched in November 2022 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, XBOX One, XBOX Series X|S, Switch, and PC, and the Switch 2 release marks the open-zone adventure’s debut on Nintendo’s latest console.
