ExileCon 2023 is currently taking place and Grinding Gear Games has shared a new trailer for the upcoming Path of Exile 2. But perhaps the bigger news is the announcement that Path of Exile 2 will be a standalone game instead of an expansion to Path of Exile 1. That means moving forward, the games will have separate balance, systems, and future expansions. Grinding Gear Games did say that purchases will still be shared between both games.

According to game director Jonathan Rogers, the decision was made because the team realized that as the project grew in scope, they “would essentially be getting rid of a game people love for no real reason.” CEO Chris Wilson will oversee the original Path of Exile, while Rogers and Matthew Roberts will direct the sequel.

You can watch the new trailer for Path of Exile 2, which will launch with 12 classes, 36 Ascendancy classes, 1,500 passive skills, 240 active skills, and 100 distinct environments with a unique boss for each one. So, if you aren’t thrilled about the path Diablo IV and its team is taking, you can consider two options from Grinding Gear Games in the future.
