The original creator of Minecraft, Notch, has announced a spiritual successor on social media. In a poll posted on X, Notch asked the community whether he should continue working on a traditional roguelike or create a spiritual successor to Minecraft. Considering the popularity of Minecraft—it is the best-selling game of all time—it’s not surprising that the poll currently sits at 79 percent to 21 percent in favor of Minecraft 2. Now, Notch sold Minecraft and Mojang to Microsoft in 2014, so he can’t actually create Minecraft 2. He’s making it clear in his post that he’ll do this in a way that won’t infringe on what Microsoft and the Mojang team are doing.
Since its creation, Minecraft has gone on to establish an entire genre of crafting survival games. Its DNA lives in some of today’s most popular games, including Palworld. As of October 2023, Minecraft has sold over 300 million copies, and this year, a movie adaptation starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa is heading to theaters.
