While all the attention is currently on the Switch 2, now that Nintendo has confirmed its existence, the original Switch is still humming along as it tries to overthrow the PlayStation 2 as the best-selling console ever. For now, though, the Switch has its work cut out as Nintendo has confirmed hardware sales are now at 150.86 million units, while software sales have reached nearly 1.36 billion units. The news comes after Nintendo reported that Switch sales were at 146.04 million units in November 2024. As expected, sales of the console have slowed in recent months, but it still has a chance of eventually overtaking the PlayStation 2, depending on continued support after the successor arrives.
First-party Switch titles continue to be wildly successful. Recent launches that have sold millions of units include The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom at 3.91 million, Super Mario Party Jamboree at 6.17 million, and Mario & Luigi: Brothership at 1.84 million. In the company’s most recent financial results, Nintendo again confirmed the Switch 2 will be released this year. After releasing a teaser video, we’ll learn more about the console during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on April 2, 2025. Players will also have the opportunity to check out the new console at various Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events around the world.
