Filming has officially begun for the live-action movie adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, starring Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Set to arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027, the film was showcased in stills Nintendo shared on its Nintendo Today! app and on social media, giving us our first look at Bragason and Ainsworth in costume. What’s interesting is that Zelda is wearing a blue outfit that resembles her attire in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, while Link is in a more familiar dark green tunic seen in classic games. We still know little about the movie’s plot, and considering the overarching timeline of The Legend of Zelda series, it’s best not to even guess.
The live-action film was originally announced in November 2023, produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad with Wes Ball directing. The movie was originally set to be released on March 26, 2027, but got a new release date in June that pushed it to May 7. The casting of Bragason and Ainsworth was revealed in July, though those are the only characters that have been officially confirmed so far.
Nintendo is investing heavily in movies now, following the success of The Super Mario Bros. animated film that grossed over $1.3 billion at the box office worldwide. Its sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, just got its first trailer, revealing Rosalina and Bowser Jr., played by Brie Larson and Benny Safdie, respectively.
