As Nintendo prepares for the launch of the Switch 2, it has announced a new feature called Virtual Game Cards that will work for both the current Switch and its successor. Virtual Game Cards make it easier to share digital games across consoles, even allowing you to lend someone a digital game for two weeks at a time. The system is designed to make it easier to transfer digital titles from the Switch to the Switch 2 console, but it’s also great for current owners with multiple Switch units in their household.
The concept behind Virtual Game Cards is to enable digital games to act like physical games, meaning you can “eject” them and “load” them into another console. Switch owners can freely load and arrange which games they play on up to two systems. Virtual Game Cards will also allow users to lend a game to family group members. They must connect through local wireless to lend the game, and it’s restricted to one game at a time for each person. The game will automatically return to its owner after 14 days. It’s worth mentioning that saved data won’t be erased when returning virtual game cards.
The Virtual Game Card feature will be added in a system update in late April.
