In December 2024, developer Genki announced a new Tokyo Xtreme Racer title after an 18-year break. At the time, it was unclear when we would be able to get our hands on it, but now we know and it’s a lot sooner than expected. The game is launching into Steam Early Access on January 23, 2025. The reason the team is choosing Early Access is to gather feedback from its passionate community that has been waiting nearly two decades for a new game. Genki chose PC first because it is the easiest way to get as many people as possible to play the game.

The Tokyo Xtreme Racer series is one of my all-time favorites growing up. In this latest iteration, players will race in a sealed-off future Tokyo. As expected, the game features real vehicles, though it’s unclear what the launch lineup looks like. The franchise focuses on delivering a more arcade-style racing game rather than a true simulator such as Gran Turismo. If it can capture that nostalgic gameplay with modern conventions, this could be one of the most enjoyable racing games we’ve had in decades.
