The Mario vs. Sonic rivalry was huge in the ’90s, but it really hasn’t been the same since SEGA stopped making video game consoles. Still, these two iconic video game mascots continue to be compared to one another, most recently with the success of The Super Mario Bros. movie. In 2021, LEGO released a myriad of Mario sets and now Sonic the Hedgehog is getting a similar treatment. Don’t be surprised if Mario and Sonic LEGO kits inevitably get compared to one another.
The LEGO Sonic product range will be available at authorized retailers starting in August 2023. Four sets were revealed today, of different sizes and build complexities. Similar to how Mario’s LEGO sets try to bring the games to life, Sonic fans get to build high-velocity obstacles for the blue speedster to blast through.
“It really isn’t like anything else! The sets offer an entirely new, action-packed play experience,” says Frédéric Roland Andre, Designer at the LEGO Group. “I’m especially proud of the Speed Sphere, as it was quite a challenge to figure out how we would get Sonic to speed up and interact with each course. Sonic is known for his speed and how he runs and jumps through courses, so for LEGO sets inspired by him there was no way we could create a static set, we simply had to be creative and make them as action-packed as possible!”
