After numerous teases, leaks, and rumors, the next entry in the Mortal Kombat series is officially Mortal Kombat 1 and not Mortal Kombat 12. But perhaps the bigger surprise is the game’s release date, which is currently scheduled for September 19, 2023. Mortal Kombat 1 is heading to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC. For those who keep up with the series, Mortal Kombat 1 will be set in a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe created by Fire God Liu Kang and it will feature reimagined versions of iconic characters. The official announcement trailer shows how things have changed, and we might see mortal enemies teaming up as friends.
While the full roster hasn’t been announced, the game will include Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and more. The Story Mode promises to deliver an immersive cinematic narrative, and players can expect to see some twists on classic rivalries and original backstories on all these iconic characters.
Mortal Kombat 1 will also introduce Kameo Fighters, a unique roster of partner characters that can assist during matches. This might be a bit like what the original Marvel vs. Capcom had.
Preorders will start tomorrow and the following editions will be available:
- Mortal Kombat 1 Standard Edition: $69.99, available physically and digitally on all platforms.
- Mortal Kombat 1 Premium Edition: $109.99, available physically and digitally, adds the Kombat Pack (Jean-Claude Van Damme character skin for Johnny Cage at launch, early access to six new playable characters and five new Kameo Fighters available post-launch), early access to the game beginning September 14, and 1,250 Dragon Krystals (in-game currency).
- Mortal Kombat 1 Kollector’s Edition: $249.99, available physically at select retailers on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. All preorders include Shang Tsung as an in-game playable character, and those who preorder on console will also receive access to the game’s beta in August.
Expect to see Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay during next week’s PlayStation Showcase.
