Those hoping to see Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay tomorrow during the Sony PlayStation Showcase, will have to wait a bit longer. Geoff Keighley of Summer Game Fest has confirmed the world gameplay premiere of Mortal Kombat 1 will happen on June 8 at Summer Game Fest, when Ed Boon joins Keighley on stage. Announced last week, Mortal Kombat 1 is a reboot of the series and releases September 19, 2023 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Switch. The game introduces a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe, created by the Fire God Liu Kang and features reimagined versions of iconic characters. Mortal Kombat 1 also brings a new fighting system, game modes, and more.
The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are being developed by the NetherRealm team, while QLOC is developing the PC version of the game. Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive are responsible for the Switch version. While the full roster hasn’t been announced, NetherRealm did confirm the following characters: Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, and Johnny Cage. The game will also have Kameo Fighters, a unique roster of partner characters that can assist during matches, a new feature for Mortal Kombat. Finally, an FAQ page on the game’s website confirmed Mortal Kombat 1 will have rollback netcode for online gameplay.
For now, we’ll all have to patiently wait until June 8 to see gameplay footage for the next entry in this storied fighting franchise.
