Bungie has published the Marathon roadmap it promised earlier this month, and it lays out three updates between now and next spring: the Nightfall Refresh on October 6, Symbiosis on December 8, and a larger March update that Bungie is calling Marathon’s evolution. The blog follows Monday’s Next Chapter for Bungie post from studio head Poria Torkan and Marathon general manager Josh Deane, which acknowledged the game didn’t reach as many players as the studio hoped and said a separate look at Marathon’s direction was coming. Bungie is framing this as Marathon’s part of that larger conversation, and the plan it describes runs into 2027.

Most of the blog is about moving Marathon beyond extraction, with Bungie saying PvEvP will stay but become one option in a connected set of survival experiences with different levels of intensity, options for solo players and crews, and more approachable entry points for new players. The studio is grouping the work into three areas: more ways to play, an arsenal of shells with more control over each one’s progression and role through a reworked Cradle, and a Tau Ceti IV that is more alien and hostile with stronger ties to the original Marathon trilogy. That last point includes the Pfhor, which Bungie says have changed since fans last saw them, along with larger new combatants designed around crew coordination.

Last week I said Symbiosis was probably the more exciting update for players, and today’s post adds detail to what was announced then. The permanent PvE mode is still being finalized, with a deeper look promised before December 8, and it arrives alongside an experimental Team Deathmatch mode meant to inform the future of competitive play. Perimeter is getting a visual overhaul built around a fungal ecosystem spreading across the zone, plus new points of interest, summits to climb, and a pinnacle encounter against the Tick Queen, the largest combatant in the game so far. The new shell is Bishop, a robot samurai built around speed, surprise, and burst melee damage, and the improved onboarding comes with a CyAc-sponsored social space and firing range for testing weapons and abilities.

March is where Bungie says the pieces come together, with plans for an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences, a new onboarding experience, a refactored Cradle with deeper shell progression, more focused questlines and narrative, new alien combatants, and an entirely new zone that Bungie isn’t detailing yet. The studio calls March meaningfully larger than Symbiosis and the point where the experience starts operating as a connected whole, while also saying it isn’t the end of the plan. Bungie says it will share more as each part takes shape.

Before any of that, the Nightfall Refresh on October 6 resets progression and the economy for everyone with a new Rewards Pass, quality of life improvements, and balance tuning, and Bungie posted a fuller breakdown of the update on X. For context, Marathon’s Steam player count was at a 24-hour peak of just over 5,000 in July, down from an all-time peak of 88,337 at launch. Bungie also released a Dev Insights video alongside the roadmap, and the full post is on Bungie’s site.
