The Legend of Zelda movie, which is set to arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027, will be exclusive to Netflix following its theatrical run and home entertainment windows. The news comes from a press release, where Netflix and Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) announced a global Pay-1 licensing deal in which SPE’s feature films will stream on Netflix worldwide once they’re out of theaters. It’s a multi-year agreement, and an industry-first for Pay-1.
The arrangement is rolling out gradually starting later this year, based on individual territory rights. Full global availability on Netflix is expected by early 2029, and as part of the deal, Netflix will also license rights to select SPE feature film and television library titles.
Really, the most important bit of all this for gamers is that Nintendo’s live-action The Legend of Zelda is specifically called out as one of the SPE feature film titles that will stream on Netflix as part of the new deal. It’s not too big of a surprise, though, since The Super Mario Bros. Movie was also available on Netflix after its theatrical run.
The Legend of Zelda movie stars Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. Filming is currently underway in New Zealand with Wes Ball directing and Derek Connolly writing the screenplay. Before we get to enjoy that, though, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters on April 3, 2026.
