Lionsgate Movies has officially released the first trailer for the upcoming Borderlands movie, and I’m pretty torn. I’m desperately hoping this will be entertaining, given my absolute love for the Borderlands franchise, but this trailer doesn’t exactly hit the mark. Ariana Greenblatt’s portrayal of Tiny Tina, at least in the trailer, doesn’t quite capture the character’s spunky personality. And while Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis are amazing actresses, the casting feels a bit off, especially Blanchett’s role as Lilith.
It will take some getting used to Jack Black’s version of Claptrap, but I have faith he will nail the humor. However, the most surprising casting choice is Kevin Hart playing Roland. With his comedic background, he might pull it off, but he just doesn’t look the part.
After watching the trailer, I’m left thinking the movie might not be all bad, yet it somehow also looks like a trainwreck. And maybe that’s exactly what the Borderlands movie needs, considering the games are as chaotic as they come.
It was previously announced that the movie would hit theaters on August 9, but interestingly, all the current trailers now say “Coming Soon!” In fact, none of the YouTube descriptions or social media posts are mentioning a date. It’s possible the movie is releasing earlier than anticipated, they just don’t have a new date to announce just yet.
The Borderlands movie stars Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, Jack Black as Claptrap, Edgar Ramirez as Atlas, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Gina Gershon as Mad Moxxi, and Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis.
