Heroes of the Storm has been trademarked by Blizzard Entertainment, with the filing first appearing on the New Zealand trademark office’s website. It has since been trademarked in Europe and the United States, leaving us to wonder what Heroes of the Storm could be.
At first thought, it would be a safe bet that it’s a re-branding of the Blizzard MOBA game that was originally called Blizzard DOTA. But after a little dispute with Valve, Blizzard amicably agreed to rename its MOBA to Blizzard All-Stars. The problem is, the trademark specifically notes that it’s for “computer game discs” as well as “downloadable electronic game software for use on portable electronic devices such as mobile and cellular phones, laptops, handheld computers, and tablet PCs.”
Currently, Hearthstone is the only known product from Blizzard that will be working on mobile devices such as tablets, however the trademark does encompass laptops. As for shipping with an actual disc, that wouldn’t make sense for Hearthstone since it’s going to be a free-to-play, downloadable game. Of course there’s wild speculation that this could be the name for a World of Warcraft expansion, but then there’s also the question of what happened with The Dark Below which some have concluded was just a hoax.
We still believes that Heroes of the Storm fits the name for the Blizzard MOBA game, and Blizzard could ship it separately on its own that includes a StarCraft II starter edition and the custom map pre-loaded in order to get more players interested in StarCraft II.
Either way, we expect Blizzard to announce more news about what it has in the works at this year’s Blizzcon event, which kicks off on November 8, 2013.
