Rockstar is making the current-generation versions of Grand Theft Auto V free to anyone who already owns the game on older hardware, starting tomorrow. Owners of any PlayStation 4 version or the digital XBOX One version can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 or XBOX Series X|S editions at no additional cost, with the rollout timed ahead of a new GTA Online heist landing in July.
The console upgrade carries over your Story Mode and Online progress through Rockstar’s migration process, and it adds the current-gen features that have piled up since launch, including Hao’s Special Works high-performance vehicles and upgrades along with Career Progress rewards. PC players get a free path too, upgrading from the Legacy version to Enhanced, which adds PC-only extras like ray traced ambient occlusion and global illumination. GTA+ members can now play GTA V’s Story Mode alongside GTA Online as part of the GTA+ Games Library.
The upgrade is the groundwork for The Kortz Center Heist, the summer update coming to GTA Online in July. It’s a multistage art-theft job set at the Kortz Center, a gallery in the hills of Pacific Bluffs in Los Santos, and running it means adding an Art Studio to a Mansion property before scoping out the complex and picking an approach. Rockstar is filling the coming weeks with prep, from bonus GTA$ events and discounts to the Fine Art Collector program, and there’s a limited-time offer giving everyone 40 percent bonus GTA$ on all Shark Cards.
The Kortz Center Heist comes to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, XBOX One, XBOX Series X|S, and PC in July. The free upgrades, though, go live tomorrow.
