Fortnite is looking to expand its audience even more, announcing a new first-person 5v5 competitive game mode called Ballistic. The new mode likely aims to appeal to Counter-Strike and Valorant players, and they will get the first taste of it when it launches in Early Access on December 11. It will initially have both Ranked and Unranked modes with one map, Skyline 10. Initially there will be a starting set of weapons and a limited number of items, but adjustments will be made based on player feedback. The team also has major updates including new maps, weapons, and features in the works.

The no-build mode will be available on all platforms and regions, except for South Korea and Russia. All saved presents from a player’s Locker will carry over into Ballistic. The mode supports existing Fortnite Outfits, Back Blings, Kicks, Wraps, Sprays, and Emotes.

The way the mode works will be familiar to anyone who plays competitive PvP team-based shooters. Players are divided into two teams at the start of the match: attackers and defenders. Attackers must plant the Rift Point Device at one of two sites on the map, while defenders need to prevent it from being planted or detonating, which takes 45 seconds after it is planted. Ballistic will not feature respawns, meaning the round ends if the Rift Point Device detonates or a team is fully eliminated. Players switch sides after six rounds, and the game ends once either team has won seven rounds total.
