I always think the western genre is one of the most underutilized settings in video games. Outside of Red Dead Redemption, there really aren’t many games that nail the frontier fantasy, and there definitely isn’t a good western-style survival game. Funny enough, I was just complaining to a friend about this a few weeks ago, and now here comes Jeff Kaplan’s new studio with exactly that.

Kaplan, who is best known for his design work on World of Warcraft and directing Overwatch at Blizzard Entertainment before leaving the company in 2021, confirmed the announcement of The Legend of California on a podcast with Lex Fridman earlier today. The game is being developed by his new studio, Kintsugiyama, and published by Dreamhaven. Dreamhaven was founded by former Blizzard president Mike Morhaime, so it’s a bit of a Blizzard reunion, as Kaplan left the company in 2021 only to end up turning to former colleagues for his new studio and game. The Legend of California is a multiplayer action-survival FPS set on the mythical Island of California during the gold rush era, heading to Early Access on PC via Steam and Epic Games Store sometime in 2026.

According to the game’s description on Steam, The Legend of California has players exploring a vast open world inspired by the gold rush, with distinct biomes, PvE encounters, and iconic California landmarks. The core gameplay loop involves gathering, crafting, building, hunting, and fighting across the frontier, either solo or in a company of up to four players on persistent multiplayer servers. Players can establish and expand their own ranch, build mines and stables, and unlock crafting stations. Combat is FPS-based and rewards precision, whether you’re hunting wildlife, clearing hostile encampments, or defending your territory in optional PvP. It’s worth noting that it takes place on the mythical island of California, so not exactly based on real life.

What stands out to me is the setting. A gold rush-era survival game with ranch building and co-op on persistent servers sounds like the exact type of game I’ve been wanting for years. The western genre has so much potential for survival mechanics, from managing resources on the frontier to defending your claim against other players, and I’m surprised it’s taken this long for someone to really go for it. The fact that it’s coming from one of the minds behind two of the most influential multiplayer games of the last 20 years only makes it more interesting. Kaplan has developed a reputation over the years and it’ll be interesting to see how his take on the crafting-survival genre sticks. The trailer, though, is a little underwhelming.
