Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture was unveiled at the Sony press conference during Gamescom 2013, the next title from the developers of Dear Esther, The Chinese Room. It has now been revealed that Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture will be exclusive to the PlayStation 4 and won’t ever be heading to PC. According to The Chinese Room, the decision came down to whether or not the team could create the product it wanted without help. It felt that Kickstarter wouldn’t be enough, and even if it did have the money, it didn’t have the production expertise.

So when Sony Santa Monica contacted the indie developers, The Chinese Room listened. After a “long dark night of the soul mulling over implications of shifting across to console,” said Dan Pinchbeck, the decision was made. And what it really came down to for the developers is that Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture just wouldn’t be possible, at least the way they envisioned it, without the aid of Sony Santa Monica. So for the PC gamers that are disappointed that the title isn’t heading to the PC, rest assured it wouldn’t be heading anywhere without Sony Santa Monica’s involvement.

As for making a return back to the PC with a future title, The Chinese Room isn’t ruling it out. It knows it has fans there but also wanted to express that the PlayStation 4 “is genuinely a really, really cool platform.”
