Nearly a year after Death Stranding Isolations was announced for Disney+, Kojima Productions has shared the first teaser and a proper story synopsis for the animated series at its 10th anniversary event, Beyond the Strand: The Odyssey of Creation and Endeavor, at Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo. The series is still on track to stream exclusively on Disney+ in 2027, and the studio also confirmed that author Tow Ubukata is handling series composition and the screenplay. Ubukata’s resume spans novels, games, comics, and animation, and he won the Nihon SF Taisho Award in 2003 for Mardock Scramble, along with a string of Japanese literary awards for his history novels Tenchi Meisatsu and Mitsukuni-den.

The synopsis opens with the line “My mom became a crater,” which sets the tone for a story that takes place in North America immediately after Sam reconnects the continent through the Chiral Network. Rather than a sequel to the games, Isolations follows the fallout of those renewed connections, which bring consequences of their own as America is rebuilt. The central character is a young girl forced into isolation after the Death Stranding who grows to prefer solitude, cutting herself off from any real human connection, until chance encounters pull her into a world she doesn’t recognize. Alongside her are several characters walking a different path from Sam and his Bridges comrades: a wise old man who connects people through a method that defies all reckoning, a female soldier caught in a cycle of war and destruction, and a boy seething with rage at the absurdity of his life. That lines up with the four characters Kojima Productions described at last year’s announcement, and connection and isolation remain the series’ core themes, as I noted in my Death Stranding 2: On the Beach review.

Takayuki Sano directs, with Hideo Kojima as executive producer and Ilya Kuvshinov as original character designer, and the hand-drawn 2D animation is coming from E&H production, the studio behind Ninja Kamui, Bullet/Bullet, and the Magic Knight Rayearth television series. “One of the unique abilities of entertainment is its power to enhance the spirituality of those who consume it, and I think this is something that Mr. Kojima’s works have always achieved,” Sano said. “As a result, I approached this production with an exceptionally strong sense of duty and responsibility.” The Beyond the Strand exhibition itself runs from October 31 to December 20 at Azabudai Hills Gallery, with never-before-seen production materials, a 10th anniversary limited Ludens statue, and a 360-degree video installation made exclusively for the show.
