Spike Chunsoft recently shared a fresh batch of details on Danganronpa 2×2, its upcoming remake of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, and included a delay announcement in alongside them. The game had been planning for a 2026 release, but producer Shohei Sakakibara confirmed it has been pushed to early 2027, with a specific date to come later. “We are continuing to work to bring you the best possible experience,” Sakakibara said in a message to fans. “We sincerely appreciate your patience as development continues.”
Slayhem is the big addition here, giving the remake a second full scenario alongside the retold original story. Players can choose between two modes: Original, which retells the 2012 story with enhanced visuals and updated presentation for modern platforms, and Slayhem, where a certain incident sets off a very different chain of events with new victims, culprits, and tricks. Both modes are available from the start. According to Spike Chunsoft, Slayhem offers roughly 20 percent more content than Original mode.
The studio also detailed the game’s overhauled World Map, which trades the original’s side-scrolling travel system for a full 3D map that gives a better sense of the island’s layout. Players can run across the map freely or fast travel to a selected destination, and a first-person view plays up the island’s tropical atmosphere. Character portraits are getting new illustrations as well, though everything shown so far comes from the Japanese development build, so the final English version may differ.
The Danganronpa series kicked off on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in Japan back in 2010 and has since shipped over 10 million copies worldwide across three mainline entries and two spin-offs. Danganronpa 2×2 launches in early 2027 in North America and Europe on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
