In CD Projekt Group’s Q1 2025 earnings report, developer CD Projekt RED confirmed that the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, currently called Cyberpunk 2, has entered the pre-production phase. The news shouldn’t be too surprising, considering the commercial success of Cyberpunk 2077 despite its rough launch. The game will surely reach a new audience when Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition launches on Switch 2 on June 5. In addition, the company confirmed Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion has sold 10 million copies as of May 28, 2025. This includes copies of Phantom Liberty that were sold separately and in the Ultimate Edition bundle.
In related news, CD Projekt RED also revealed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold 60 million copies as of May 28, 2025. That includes the base game and Game of the Year version, but does not include expansions that were sold separately. We already know The Witcher 4 is in development, since the game got a surprising trailer at The Game Awards 2024.
On the business side of things, headcount dedicated to game development reached 730 as of April 30, 2025, and of these, 422 developers are focused on The Witcher 4. Since Cyberpunk 2 is still in pre-production, there are only 96 developers dedicated to that project. There are also 48 developers on the unannounced Sirius Hadar project.
If you follow gaming news, you’ll know Cyberpunk 2077’s initial launch was packed full of bugs. It took a while for CD Projekt RED to resolve a lot of the game’s issues, and the game’s 2.0 update in 2023 along with the release of the Phantom Liberty expansion gave it a second life. In November 2024, the team announced Cyberpunk 2077 had sold 30 million copies, and sales of Phantom Liberty have doubled since January 2024, when it had sold over five million units.
