One of the biggest reasons Overwatch 2 was originally created was to add a significant PvE component. However, after the game launched without this feature, the team has remained relatively quiet about PvE elements. Now we know why.

During a Twitch stream earlier today, which covered the game’s content roadmap, executive producer Jared Neuss confirmed that PvE content is being cut: “Development on the PvE experience really hasn’t made the progress that we would have hoped,” he said. “With everything we’ve learned about what it takes to operate this game at the level you deserve, it’s clear that we can’t deliver on that original vision for PvE.” As a result, hero missions have been scrapped, but story missions are still in development.

As for what is coming to the game, Season 5 will bring a new limited time event called Questwatch, along with Mischief & Magic, a new cinematic reveal and the return of Summer Games. Season 6 will add Story Missions, a new Support Hero, a player progression system, and more. Looking towards the future, expect a new Tank Hero to be added, along with a new Control Map, Winter Event, Hero Mastery Missions, a rework for Roadhog and Sombra, additional cinematic debuts, and more.

GameSpot’s interview with game director Aaron Keller and executive producer Jared Neuss provides an in-depth look at the future of Overwatch 2. Some skeptics might say Overwatch 2’s PvE content is being cut because there’s no good way to monetize it, and they might not actually be wrong. But you can watch the developer update below and draw your own conclusions.
