Buckle up and get ready for a Nintendo Cinematic Universe, as The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to make money. It is now officially the 10th animated film to pass the $1 billion mark worldwide, according to The Hollywood Reporter. More notably, it’s the first animated movie to achieve the feat since the COVID-19 pandemic became a thing, and only the fifth movie overall (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, and Avatar: The Way of Water). Domestically, the movie is expected to generate around $40 million, bringing its North American total to $490 million through Sunday. Internationally, its weekend total is estimated to be around $68.3 million, contributing to a total of $532.5 million.
From its initial release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has been setting records, and even Jack Black’s “Peaches” has gone viral. It easily became the highest-grossing video game adaptation in history and now, with its release in Japan, we should expect that number to continue to climb. Clearly, Mario knows how to collect coins.
