In a recent tweet, Netflix has finally confirmed they’re moving forward with developing a Gears of War franchise (GoWCMU?) with Dr. Strange and Dune screenwriter Jon Spaihts. Details are slim so far, but the first title will be a Gears of War movie, followed by an adult animated series, “with the potential for more stories to follow.”

Netflix previously announced that Gears studio The Coalition will be producing the Gears of War movie, so they’re already a step ahead of the atrocious Halo series, which was produced in-house at Showtime, and was dragged down with behind-the-scenes drama.
“Gears of War is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates.’ said Spaihts. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”

“We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring Gears of War to life,” said The Coalition in a press release. “Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic science fiction universes and he truly loves Gears of War. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”
