Following the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, Nintendo is now working on its own cinematic universe with a live-action film based on The Legend of Zelda. Currently set to release on May 7, 2027, the adaptation is being produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, with Sony Pictures Entertainment handling distribution and co-financing the movie with Nintendo. Wes Ball will direct the film, and Derek Connolly is writing the screenplay. Fans have been anxiously awaiting the cast announcement, and earlier today the Nintendo Today! app revealed who will play Link and Zelda.
Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link, while Bo Bragason will portray Zelda. The names may be unfamiliar to those in the U.S., but Bo Bragason is best known for her roles in The Jetty and Renegade Nell. Being cast as the titular Zelda will surely be her most prominent role yet. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth played Miles Wingrave in The Haunting of Bly Manor and has appeared in Son of a Critch and an episode of Netflix’s The Sandman.
The announcement was also shared on Nintendo of Japan’s social media.
This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen. (1/2) pic.twitter.com/KA5XW3lwul
